Hi, I’m Jo, a coach and senior doctor with…
Let me introduce myself...
● Over 30 years in the NHS
● 16 years as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine.
● Regional & National Leadership in Medical Education.
● Senior NHS Coach, Mentor and Appraiser experience.
● PG Certificates in Career Development & Medical Education.
● Over 5 years as a Senior Case Manager, Career and Exam Coach in the NHS Professional Support & Well-being Service.
● Lived experience of making strengths-based career changes.
My own career journey:
In 2016, the strain of juggling a hectic career as an Emergency Medicine Consultant and Head of School, alongside three young children, led me to the brink of burnout. Ultimately this experience triggered a slide out of love with a clinical role I once adored.
I re-focused on medical education where I thrived, taking on national roles for Training Quality and Leadership, plus examining and supporting recruitment. I led the development of national guidance including ‘Promoting Excellence In Emergency Medicine Training’ and an e-Learning for Health module on ‘Leading Self’. My work was awarded the RCEM College Medal in 2021.
Post-pandemic, I swapped clinical hours to support team wellbeing. My lived experience enhanced my understanding and empathy for others at work; new skills in coaching and careers led to two years as a Trust coach, working across the workforce. Coaching was a catalyst for my own strengths- based career transformation and decision making. I left clinical practice in 2023 to focus on medical education and coaching.
Much of my work remains NHS. I am Deputy Programme Director for Wessex Deanery Professional Support and Wellbeing Service, supporting doctors to successfully navigate their lives and careers. I also lead the career support service and provide exam coaching. My portfolio includes regional consultant & trainee workshops, consultant coaching for local NHS organisations and I work as a Shapes Toolkit trainer with Dr. Rachel Morris from the 'You are not a Frog' podcast.
I live in Hampshire with my family and dog Mabel, learning to prioritise my own well-being, whilst enjoying my career, family and the journey again.
